Capitals almost nobody can name

15 August 2026 · Cartographer expedition

Every stop is a seat of government — of a principality, a self-governing island, an oil sultanate, and two countries where the obvious answer is the wrong one.

The five stops

Stop 1 · Liechtenstein

Vaduz

The prince still lives in the castle above town and holds real veto power. The country is doubly landlocked — every neighbour is landlocked too.

Stop 2 · Greenland

Nuuk

Around 19,000 people — a third of the territory's population. No roads connect any two towns on the island; everything moves by boat, plane or helicopter.

Stop 3 · Côte d'Ivoire

Yamoussoukro

The official capital since 1983 — but almost every embassy and ministry stayed 230 km away in Abidjan, which most people still assume is the capital.

Stop 4 · Bolivia

Sucre

Constitutionally the capital, though the executive and legislature both sit in La Paz. The country is one of very few with two functioning capital cities.

Stop 5 · Brunei

Bandar Seri Begawan

Kampong Ayer has been continuously inhabited for over 600 years, with its own schools, mosques and fire station — all on stilts above the water.
