Privacy Policy
Last updated: 1 October 2026
The short version. Daily Expedition doesn't ask for your name, email, or an account. To save your daily progress we store a random ID in your browser or in the iPhone app — not anything that identifies you personally. The one outside company involved is Google, which shows the ads and, in the UK/EEA, asks for your consent first. You can opt out of personalised ads, and clearing your browser data or deleting the app wipes everything we keep on your device.
1. Who we are
Daily Expedition is a geography game for the web and iPhone, operated by Narsil Media ("we", "us"), based in the United Kingdom. We are the data controller for the limited information described here. You can reach us at privacy@narsilmedia.co.uk.
2. What we collect, and why
We keep as little as possible. There is no sign-up and we never ask for your name, email address, or location.
- A random device ID. The first time you play, your browser generates a random identifier (a UUID) and stores it locally. We use it only to remember your progress in today's expedition and which past ones you've played. It isn't linked to your identity, and we don't use it to track you across other websites.
- Your game progress. On our servers we store what that random ID has done in the game — the map pins you drop, your scores, and clue purchases. The pins are guesses on a world map; they are not your real-world location.
- A "how to play seen" flag, stored in your browser so we don't show the instructions every visit.
- Standard technical data. Our hosting provider (Amazon Web Services) automatically processes technical information such as your IP address and browser type in order to deliver and secure the site. This is normal for any website.
3. Advertising
We show ads through Google AdSense. To do this, Google may set cookies and use identifiers to serve and measure ads, and — where you allow it — to personalise them. Google acts as an independent party for this advertising data.
In the UK, EEA and Switzerland, we use Google's certified consent tool to ask your permission before any personalised advertising cookies are set. You can choose "Do not consent", and you can change your choice at any time. You can also review and control Google's use of your data at My Ad Center, and read how Google handles data in advertising at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.
In the iPhone app
The app shows ads through Google AdMob, Google's service for apps. When you first open the app, iOS asks whether Daily Expedition may track your activity across other companies' apps and websites. If you choose "Ask App Not to Track", AdMob does not receive your device's advertising identifier and the ads you see are not personalised using it. In the UK, EEA and Switzerland the app also asks for your consent through Google's certified consent tool, and you can change that choice at any time from Ad privacy choices in the app's menu. You can also turn tracking off later in iOS Settings › Privacy & Security › Tracking.
4. Cookies and local storage
We use browser storage in two ways:
- Essential storage — the random device ID and the "instructions seen" flag described above. These make the game work and are kept in your browser's local storage, not sent to advertisers.
- Advertising cookies — set by Google, and in the UK/EEA only after you consent.
Clearing your browser's site data for this site removes the local items and effectively resets you to a brand-new player.
The iPhone app keeps the same random device ID, plus your daily-reminder setting, in the app's own storage on your phone. If you turn on the daily reminder, the app schedules the notifications on your phone itself: nothing about them is sent to us or anyone else, and you can turn them off from the app's menu or in iOS Settings. Deleting the app removes everything it stored.
5. Legal bases (UK GDPR)
- Running the game (the device ID and progress) — our legitimate interest in providing a working game you asked to play.
- Personalised advertising in the UK/EEA/Switzerland — your consent, which you can withdraw at any time.
6. Who we share data with
- Google — for the advertising described in section 3 (AdSense on the web, AdMob in the iPhone app).
- Amazon Web Services — our hosting provider, which stores the game data and serves the site on our behalf.
We do not sell your personal information, and we don't share it with anyone else for their own marketing.
7. International transfers
Google and AWS are global providers and may process data on servers outside the UK. Where that happens, it is covered by the safeguards those providers put in place (such as the UK's International Data Transfer Agreement or equivalent).
8. How long we keep it
Game progress tied to your random device ID is kept so you can pick expeditions back up. If you'd like it removed, clear your browser data or delete the app (which removes the ID from your device) or contact us and we'll delete the records associated with your ID. Google sets its own retention periods for advertising data.
9. Your rights
Under UK data protection law you have the right to access, correct, or erase your data, to object to or restrict its use, and to withdraw consent for advertising. Because we hold data only against a random ID you control, the quickest way to exercise most of these is to clear your browser data or delete the app — but you can also email us at privacy@narsilmedia.co.uk. If you're unhappy with how we've handled your data, you can complain to the UK's Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
10. Children
Daily Expedition isn't directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect data from them.
11. Changes to this policy
If we change how we handle data, we'll update this page and the "last updated" date above.
