Cities sitting on the line of zero latitude

25 July 2026 · Cartographer expedition

Every stop today lies within half a degree of the middle of the world, where the sun rises at six and sets at six all year round.

The five stops

Stop 1 · Ecuador

Quito

The monument marking the line sits 240 m from the actual position, which GPS later corrected. Nobody has moved the monument.

Stop 2 · Gabon

Libreville

The equator crosses the country just south of the city. Gabon has set aside 11% of its land as national park, an unusually large share.

Stop 3 · Uganda

Kampala

The equator crosses the country 80 km south of the city, near Masaka, where a painted circle straddles the main road.

Stop 4 · Indonesia

Pontianak

One of very few cities almost exactly on the line. Its equator monument has been rebuilt four times, each version larger than the last.

Stop 5 · Brazil

Macapá

The Estádio Zerão has one half in the northern hemisphere and one in the southern, with the halfway line marking the equator.
