Cities defined by one annual festival

13 August 2026 · Casual expedition

Five ordinary working cities that each disappear, once a year, under an event the whole world has heard of.

The five stops

Stop 1 · Germany

Munich

Oktoberfest mostly happens in September, because the weather is better. The beer must be brewed within the city limits to be served.

Stop 2 · Spain

Pamplona

The San Fermín encierro covers 875 metres and lasts about three minutes. It is also a stop on the Camino de Santiago.

Stop 3 · Brazil

Salvador

Its carnival runs on trucks called trios elétricos rather than a stadium parade, and draws around two million people onto the streets each day.

Stop 4 · Italy

Siena

The Palio lasts about 90 seconds. A horse can win without its rider, and ten of the seventeen contrade run each race.

Stop 5 · China

Harbin

The Ice and Snow Festival uses ice cut from the Songhua River in blocks weighing hundreds of kilos, lit from within by coloured LEDs.
