Places that gave their name to a food

22 July 2026 · Casual expedition

Parmesan, Dijon mustard, Buffalo wings, Darjeeling tea and the hamburger — every stop is on your plate.

The five stops

Stop 1 · Italy

Parma

Parmigiano-Reggiano and Prosciutto di Parma are both protected by law — true parmesan can only come from this corner of Emilia-Romagna.

Stop 2 · France

Dijon

Dijon mustard got its bite from local verjuice and Burgundy wine. The city was the capital of the Duchy of Burgundy at its 15th-century peak.

Stop 3 · United States

Buffalo

Buffalo wings were invented at the Anchor Bar in 1964, reputedly as a late-night snack for the owner's son and his friends.

Stop 4 · India

Darjeeling

Darjeeling tea — the 'champagne of teas' — was the first Indian product to receive protected GI status. Kangchenjunga dominates the horizon.

Stop 5 · Germany

Hamburg

The 'Hamburg steak' sailed with German emigrants to America in the 19th century — add a bun, and the hamburger was born.
